(Della) First up was some garlic harvesting: This was a patch that I didn’t harvest last summer as it was spindly. I left it growing out of laziness coupled with curiosity, and as it all fell flat a week or so ago, I thought I might as well dig it up and have a look.
It seems that 18 months in the ground did the trick! Looks like an awful lot of garlic for two people – and I am mindful that the fresh bed I planted out in April will be ready soon too.
Spent the rest of the day hauling out some of the abundant weed growth.
Second pic is a little harvest at the end of the day: Snow peas and asparagus finishing now, strawberries getting under way and avocados aplenty.
Avocados: Need a specific cool climate variety. Ours is Fuerte. We planted it 30 odd years ago and it has loads of fruit. The beauty of it is that you can leave the fruit on the tree for ages and just pick as you need them. They ripen in about a week after picking. We have ours in a sheltered position which helps to protect from frosts and extreme weather.
(Steve) I spent the day on more prosaic and much less attractive repairs to the old Land Rover Discovery which had a (major) exhaust manifold leak and other strange symptoms. Turned out after much dismantling (and ‘mantling’) to have been a leak in a small vacuum pipe to the turbo actuator. It is now going like a rocket! Cost of repair $0. I also need to replace the doors I crushed against a log months ago and fit (new) roof racks so we can utilise the motorcycle carrier, postie bike and Canadian canoes to enjoy some canoe trips (and hikes) in our remoter river regions this summer (knee permitting).
