Ultralight Pot Lifters

I found this enchanting post on a chat forum this morning: ‘For the last 5 years I’ve been needlessly carrying this extra 0.40 Oz with my Evernew titanium pot. Now I can manage just fine with one handle’. – thank you Wayne Adelkopf‎. I do admire the lateral thinking here. It is just such genius which made America great! And Britain before it! Now simply called the ‘UK’. I do prefer ‘Great Britain’!

And .4 of an ounce is 11.5 grams (which, if you have been following A Lazy Man’s Guide to Hiking and Hunting works out like this:  ‘A saving of 10 grams now doesn’t seem so silly does it when you see that it is the same as shifting 100 kg (200 lbs) one metre (yard)!’ In this case  115 kg – try lifting that! (or just over 250 pounds) – a not inconsiderable amount!

Leaving out handles altogether and being able to save an ounce or more on your cookset without any loss of functionality is quite big news to me. More investigation necessary just when I thought I had the cookset solved!

It works. I’ve already tried it!

This got me thinking of substituting pots with handles for pots that use pot lifters. There is a fine DIY pot lifter here: at Backpacking Light for those who (like me) like to tinker. I’m sure there are many more elsewhere. I expect you will have something from me in future which makes use of tent pegs and the like and costs a few cents. Meanwhiile…

As usual Steve over at Suluk (if you are well-heeled) has already applied his creative genius to this ‘problem’and has this wonderful solution which he calls the Miksa Pot Lifter in three models 3.2, 6 and 11 grams and US$29, 19 and 23 respectively (June 2020). I have a number of Suluk products which are excellent.

GSI have this handy idea for US$5.95 (june 2020). It weighs 15 grams.

Must have titanium? Vargo Pot Gripper: 23 grams US$26.95 (June 2020)

There are many more. Much hiking effort to be saved. Thank you again Wayne.
